JUNEAU

5/19/09

Juneau…in search of Sarah. The woman in line behind me
for the bus (you heard me bus) said she would have loved to have a woman in the White House..that cute funny Sarah (did she confuse her with Tina Fey)…not Hillary—too smart for her own boots.

With a current population of about 30,000, Juneau is the capital of Alaska. It is a charming, sophisticated town. Great, great, shoe store. I do not think we have any place in San Diego that sells Jon Fluevog shoes...seriously.

We had to go and visit the post office, which doubled as a card and gift store. It had a sign in the window that states: "Thanks to brilliant and creative minds snail mail is making a comeback!" I love it!!

We walked Juneau and then saw this cute little place
“The Mesa Grill”.
Put together with two by fours, painted red. The size of a closet sitting in an empty lot. We continued to wander and look for t-shirts for the kids. Got all the way into the place where the bus would pick us up for the trip back. Henry said…we should eat. Well, no problem there for “never miss a meal Rosengren” We looked and there were tons of fancy restaurants, but Henry said if it were closer we could go to that little place. I said “What the H, H? What else do we have to do?”

We walk back to the Mesa Grill (Bobby Flay would be having a heart attack here…her using his name and all). You see the picture,
well a halibut burger was $12…seriously!! Hen got a Salmon Burger, I got a Halibut Burger. The lady who was making them was from India, but she had been in Juneau for 25 years. I asked her what she would do when they decided to build on the empty lot she was located on. She said that she had had a restaurant on this spot for years. About two years ago, the restaurant burned down. They had rented space from the Chinese people who owned the Chinese restaurant…they were uninsured. So she figured she was safe in her little hut for quite a while.

Her secret to the Salmon Burgers involved long long winters. During the winter she steamed the salmon, which enabled her to get the bones out when it flaked. She then chopped up some garlic, mixed it with some egg and shaped them into patties, and froze them. She does this all winter to get enough to make it through the summer.

As Guy Fieri, of DDD, would say—“IT’S THE MONEY!!” Quite simply the best thing I ate on the entire trip!!

I just thought I would share some images from Juneau before we continue our journey!!

We were approximately 100 people back in line....it stretched on and on to re-board the ship.

This picture was taken with my iPhone...not bad!
